Deciding Which Curly Hair Products Are Best For You?

Updated: Jul 26, 2022

Which products are best for your curls? Let's break it down. There are so many products claiming to be "The best for your frizz", "No more Frizz", "Say goodbye to those dry ends", or even claiming to bring out "The best shine and bounce". With so many options on the market, I am here to help you break down which products are best for you. Here are some of my favorite curly products and how they work.

Curl Cream

Cantu Curl Activator Cream Monat Studio One Curl Defining Cream

A curl cream's job is to help add moisture and curl definition. Curly heads are naturally dryer than those with straight hair leaving us to find products with more moisture. Just washing your hair can cause it to dry out more. Adding a curl cream to your routine can help with the dryness and keep moisture locked in between wash days.

Which hair types work best with curl creams?

Curl creams work well with all hair types, but every company has its own recipe resulting in different consistencies. This points back to your specific hair type when determining what cream is best for you. Depending on your hair type, it is typically best to find thicker creams for thicker kinky hair types. As for looser curls, light creams or a leave-in conditioner will do the job.

Tip: Start with a SMALL amount of cream. Creams usually contain ingredients that can weigh down some hair types. Shea butter for example is added to many creams to help lubricate the hair and ends up weighing it down.

Leave-in Conditioner

Noughty Intensive Care Leave- Restore Leave-In conditioner

in Conditioner

Leave-in conditioner is exactly that. Condition you leave in and don't wash out right away. Just like the conditioner you use in the shower, it helps to keep those curls hydrated until your next wash day. Leave-in conditioners are very similar to curl creams, they help add moisture, and definition without weighing down your curls. After all, no one wants weighted-down curls from using too much product. This is a great option for fine, thinner curls.

Tip: if you have fine, thinner hair like myself, don't add a leave-in conditioner and a curl cream. This too can weigh it done. If you have thicker hair, Using both may be the trick! Don't be afraid to experiment.

Hair Gel

Monat Studio One Giovanni L.A. Natural

Flexible Hold Gel Styling Gel

What is hair gel and why do curls need it? Hair gels add hold and definition to those curls. It also helps to tame frizz. A number one use for my curls is hair gel. This product is great to use after cream or leave-in conditioner. It acts as a hair spray almost. The last thing you want to add to your styling process.

Which hair types work best with gels?

Hair gels work really well with all hair types. However, there are some better than others for your specific hair type. There are strong hold gels, a medium told gels, and lightweight. A mousse or foam is similar to a lightweight gel. Some gels contain more oils than others and some contain more proteins. Depending on what your hair lacks is the kind of gel you will want. One of my favorites is Giovanni L.A. Natural Styling Gel.

Tip: Hair gel can cause a hard cast over your curls once dry. Scrunching your curls will help to release the hard cast.

Mousse and Foam

Curling Mousse Moxie Mousse

Don't let the name scare you away. Those eighties folks knew what they were talking about. Mousse and foams are a curly head's best friend, for some. They add volume and enhance curl definition as well as add texture to those curls.

Which hair types are best for Mousses and Foams?

Mousse and foams are best used with wavy/curly hair. The more hair and curl you have the less, volume, and texture is needed. Just like hair gel, this is the last thing you will add to your hair routine. They too can add a hard cast once dried so don't forge to scrunch.

Oil

Rejuvenique Oil Intensive Moroccanoil Treatment Original

Oil you may ask? Yes, oil is my best friend. Because Curls are naturally dryer, they produce less sebum which is natural scalp oil, you can't ever go wrong with a little bit of oil. Oil helps to protect and seal in the moisture that our curls desperately need. Oil can also help with hair growth. That is always a plus.

How/When to Apply Oil

There are several ways to apply oil. After when styling on your ends or applying to the scalp about 30 minutes before you wash your hair.

What kind of oil?

When it comes to knowing which oil is best for your curls, look at your porosity levels. The Requonique oil from Monat is my favorite!
