Despite the yummy delicious-looking marshmallow, this was how my hair looked after 2 nights of camping. There are two secrets to making your curls last. Wash day, and night protection. Today we will be talking about how to properly wash your curls on wash day.
Curl chart

If you haven't already, go read my blog What Hair Type are you? The image to the right breaks it down. This chart shows all hair types from straight to coily.
My hair is a mix of 3 types. 2c, 3a, and 3b. My hair around my crown is wavy. around my face and the lower neck is super curly leaving everything in between with loose curls or 3a. Does your hair have more than one curl type?
Step One Shampoo
Getting your hair is wet, make sure to use warm water. Too hot can cause damage and cold water doesn't help when trying to moisture those dry curls. Once your hair is soaked, apply shampoo. Focus on the roots and scalp when applying shampoo. Leave in shampoo for about 2-3 minutes. Or follow instructions on the bottle.

Step Two Conditioner
Applying conditioner. the amount of conditioner needed depends on your hair type. My curls are fine and thin. I also about medium length hair, I use about a quarter size amount of conditioner. If you have thicker coarse hair, you might want to use more.
Once the conditioner has been applied flip your hair upside down and scrunch the hair in upward motions. You should hear squishing noises from the product and water mixing with your hair. Remember to be soft and gentle when scrunching those curls. After scrunching all sections for about a minute, flip hair back to right side up and let sit for 2 minutes. Then rinse out the hair.
Tip: If hair is super dry, only rinse out about 85% of the conditioner. Leaving in some conditioner can actually be very useful for your curls.

Step Three Applying Product
When I get out of the shower, I use my Denman Brush to get out any of the knocks. Once your hair has been brushed out, apply products. Click here to learn more about what products work best for your curl type.
Because my hair is fine and thin, I can only apply 2 products. This is so my curls don't get weighed down. I use a leave-in conditioner first, by ranking the product with my fingers. Then I apply hair gel. Gently coat your hair with a small amount of gel and then again repeat the scrunching motion.

*Side note because my hair is so thin, I can only use max 2 products before it gets weighted down. Experiment with your curls.
Step Four Diffusing
There is nothing wrong with air drying however your hair does not have the same volume or hold for continuous days. I highly suggest using a diffuser. There are several different ways to diffuser your hair, however, the number one rule is to flip your hair upside down. Again, this helps with volume and definition. Remember to have the dryer on low and warm heat.
The best method that has been working for me is when I hover my diffuser over the roots of my hair. Allow the roots to dry first. I collect sections of hair at a time and use the same scrunching motion with the diffuser. Hold the diffuser in place for about 30-45 sections. Repeat till hair is dry.
Tip: Don't forget to scrunch out that gel cast once hair is completely dry.
