The second step is....
You guessed it. Taking care of your curls at night. If you haven't already, go check out the first secret to longer-lasting curls. Let's talk about the second and final secret, night protection. If both wash day and night protection are done properly, you can have curls last for weeks! Who would have known even while you sleeping your curls need attention? There are several different ways to protect your hair at night. Picking the best way for your hair can result in your hair type.
Silk or Satin Pillow Case

Whether you've been doing your research or this is your first time looking into it, you will hear a lot about a silk or satin pillowcase. But why you may ask? A silk pillowcase helps your curls from being damaged. A silky-like pillowcase allows your hair to glide across the pillow when you toss and turn. Where any other would cause your hair to pull. Silk is also really good for your skin, it is a double plus.
This is 100% recommended for all hair types.
Here is one from amazon that I love: https://a.co/d/cYdXMKS
Pineapple

Pineapple is the easiest when first starting out. All you need is a scrunchy. However, this particular pineapple works better with wavy/curly hair types.
As shown in the image, you will flip your head over, gather all your hair, and put it in a loose high pony. Depending on your hair length, you may want to pull half of your hair through the loose ponytail to make a bun. or if your hair is super short, using small clips to slip those curls up works as well. If your hairs are too short, it may be best to let them be.
For even better protection, you will need a silk or satin headscarf. Here is a video for step-by-step instructions. Wrap the scarf around your hair. this helps to help your hair in place during the night. This also helps reduce frizz and helps structure. making those curls last an extra few days between washes.
Silk or Satin bonnet
Going along with the headscarf, you can also look into a bonnet, silk, or satin of course. A bonnet is super useful when trying to keep your hair completely covered. Dry curls are natural and normal, a bonnet helps to reduce dry curls throughout the night. Bonnets and headscarves can also be worn throughout the day.

Just like you would gather your hair for a pineapple, you will want to do the same when using a bonnet. Do Not just put a bonnet on and call it good. Your hair needs to stay off the back of your head. This way it won't be flat in the morning. The easiest to avoid is a pineapple. A pineapple inside a scarf inside a bonnet. You can choose one for the other but all three can be done.
I recently started using a bonnet and I highly recommend it. Bonnets told those locks in place and ensure your curls last much longer. Since I have been using a bonnet I can now go 2-3 days longer between wash days. It's time to invest.
Twist and Braiding

I personally have not had any experience sleeping with twists and or braids but here is what others have to say. Twisting or braiding for overnight curl protection is a great way to get wavy without using heat. It can help to elongate and define your curls.
Depending on what your hair type is will determine how you braid/ twist your hair. Types 1 and 2 normally braid to get a non-heat wavy look. Type 3 and 4 twists to either define or elongate their curls.
Tip: One thing to remember is never go to bed with wet hair. Your hair is weakest when it is wet and when you are sleeping. Try out a new way to protect your curls overnight. Your cirls will love you for it.
