Denman brush or Finger coiling?

You may be asking yourself, what is a Denman brush? and Finger coiling sounds interesting, What is going on? You have come to the right place. These 2 techniques are most commonly used with curly and kinky hair types. just like someone may straighten their already straight hair, we help retrain our curls how to curl with either a Denman brush or fingers.

Finger coiling

There are many different ways to finger coil, it really comes down to experimenting with different ways to know which technique works best for you.

Prep your hair

When finger coiling, you will want wet hair, with some product in it. For example, leave-in condition, curl cream, etc. After that, you will split your hair into sections. this can be bottom, med, and top, or you can choose to have several different sections. For fine loose curls, I have found that splitting my hair into 3 sections works best. For kinky hair, more sections of hair seem to work better.

Start Curling

Once hair is sectioned off, brush through your wet curls with a curly-friendly brush. I prefer a Denman brush. You will then want to take a smaller section of hair bruhs it out again, and find the end of your hair. wrap this small section around your finger and roll it towards your scalp.

Denman Brush

Again, there are multiple different ways to use this brush to curl your hair. It is a game of trial and error until you find what works for you. Finding a brush with close bristles is good for wavy/ curly hair. You will want a brush with spread-out bristles if you have kinky-type hair.

Prep your hair

Just as you would prepare your hair to finger coil, you will do with the Denman brush. Hair should be wet, soaked, with some product in it. You will section off the hair. 3 sections, bottom, mid and top work best with my 2c, and 3a curls. Use your brush to comb through the hair, and get all the tangles, knots, and whatnot out.

Start curling

From there take a smaller section of hair, brush through it, and stop once close to the ends of that strand. You will wrap your hair around the brush one time, then twist. Twist the brush until the hair is tight against the scalp. From there release the wrapped bottom part of the stand from the brush and watch your curls unfold.

Finish off with...

Once hair is all curled from either coiling or with a brush, add in gel or mousse to help keep a hold.
