Let's dig a little deeper into your hair type and why it is so important to know.
Knowing your hair type can be frustrating and confusing. But once you can figure out your curl genes, you can put the pedal to the metal. Figuring out your hair type is like knowing what you're allergic to. When it comes to styling and knowing what products to buy, it is destined by your hair type.
Let's put it to the test, if you have naturally straight hair, would you buy the curl cream off the shelf at the store? Probably not. But what you didn't know is there is only one type of straight hair, and that's straight. There are 3 types of curls with 3 subcategories in each type.
Type 2: Wavy

Type 3: Curly

Type 4: Kinky

From the pictures above, wavy hair has a very loose curl to it. Curly hair is a medium-defined curl and Kinky hair is very tight, and often very thick hair. Did you find your hair type? maybe you have might of 2 or 3? Are you considered a curly head when you thought you had wavy hair? THE BEST WAY TO KNOW YOUR HAIR TYPE IS TO WASH IT, AND LET IT DRY. Pay attention to how your hair dries. does it have some wavy? maybe some curl? or is it stick straight?
Andre Walker's Hair Types or Curl Chart
The Andre Walker hair type has been around for over 30 years. This chart is most known when it comes to identifying your hair types. Andre Walker was a hairstylist of Oprah Winfrey when she studied and created this chart. Instead of looking at pictures, read the chart below and comment on which hair type you are!

I Bet You Didn't Know!
Did you know that when cutting curls you shouldn't cut them wet? My whole life I went to a salon and got my washed, brushed, and cut. Curly heads should be cut dry, this way every single curl gets cut according to the look of the individual curl.
Did you know curly hair is dryer than straight hair? Using sulfates, silicones and parabens strip your hair from oils that your curls need. Using heat on any hair type is also unhealthy. Frizzy, dry, flat curls... does any of this sound familiar? Let's talk more about porosity levels and how they can help.
Porosity levels

For curly heads, knowing your porosity level is right up there with knowing your hair type. In fact, figuring out your porosity level can lead you to know your specific hair type. Why you may ask? your porosity level will determine how close or far apart the cuticles in your hair are. This leads to knowing how well products/moisture can be absorbed.
Low: Cuticles remain close together
Medium: Cuticles don't have as tight of a bond as low.
High: Cuticles are openly spaced.
My Experience
I grew up being the only one with curly hair. And I mean 3 generations went by with no curly heads. My mom did her best to buy me "curly-friendly" products, however, curls are high maintenance. What I was doing was just not it.
2020 2022
I was shocked to see my true hair color after 21 years of living. Maybe I didn't have curly locks, maybe I was not 100% a brunette. I have a hint of red!! . I have never died my hair, never had highlights, etc. Talk about coloring your hair without actually coloring it. This is all because I found out my true hair type, I learned about my porosity levels and I found products specifically for my hair type. I know now how to take care of my curls for a healthy, bounce, silky look. You can do the same!
